Marketing Baseball
The biggest weakness for interest in Major League Baseball is their inability to market their best players and create more interest in the game for the younger generation. The game has such good young talent but is not promoted well. The game is being pushed forward more by outside influences like Eric Sim or the Savannah Bananas who know how to make fans interested in the game of baseball. All the old-school baseball fans complain about new-age technology or analytics ruining the game but I don't think that is true at all. All the bat flips and celebrations need to be promoted more by the people marketing professional baseball because that is showing the fun side of the game. The technology also gives kids numbers to compete against which in our video game society we live in will draw interest in the game as they can compete against themselves in aspects of the game of throwing harder and exit velocity.
The other part of baseball that I feel is ruining the game is the overemphasis on perfect mechanics which is a so-called phrase that nobody actually knows what it looks like. Obviously, mechanics or movement patterns are part of pitching, hitting, and fielding but it doesn't need to be taught to people at a younger age as they are just learning to have fun playing the game. Fun should be the emphasis for kids younger than 12 and adults need to realize that perfect mechanics or movement patterns are hard to teach to kids that haven't even reached puberty yet. The adults of the game don't want to see their kids fail at a young age but when the athlete hasn't even hit puberty yet they might not have all the movements and coordination they need to have good so-called mechanics. This is why you need to teach them to move fast because that can translate to them improving on the parts of the game that will help them when they move to a bigger field.
The game can change and be maintained to be better if we come together and embrace new-age baseball. Technology and analytics are all over our game and society and this won't change so we have to adapt and accept that this is part of the future of the game. I think having a growth mindset and tracking things with technology can ultimately make the game of baseball better than it has ever been. This plus a distinct effort to market the star players better can create interest in baseball that isn't happening now.
