Brady and Belichick

The debate that has lasted far too long and is one of the most pointless arguments in sports is the Brady and Belichick debate of who is better. The real answer is obviously not popular because it doesn't cause drama but they both needed each other to sustain their success for so long. In the world of professional football teams don't just have the success the Patriots had all those years without a legendary quarterback and coach. Belichick set the culture for the team and without his processes, incredible management of the roster, and game situations Brady would have never been put in the situations to win the Super Bowls that he did. Without Brady's leadership ability and great ability to take hard coaching from Belichick, the implemented culture might not have been respected by the whole team.

The truth about both of them is that to reach a sustained level of success like they did you have to love the process of getting better every day and never settle for being good enough. In this era of professional sports, we see teams win one championship and then never get over the metaphorical hangover of that and they can maintain a sustained level of success. Brady and Belichick were never satisfied by one successful year and did the incredible thing of continuing to work to ensure they would never leave the top of the league. Brady did this by maintaining an incredible level of health and fitness level for an older quarterback in the league while also pushing his teammates to improve more than they probably would've in the offseason. He performed at a constant level of excellence because he maintained these routines, making him perform at his highest ability every day. Belichick maintained his high level by sticking by his core principles while adapting to the ever-changing game of football. He made sure his teams were prepared for any situation and his greatness was shown in not ever being over-emotional but always thinking about the next play or situation that would come up.

This debate has wasted so much time over the years and even though Belichick has had some tough years in the post-Brady era it just shows how hard it is to maintain a certain level of success over a long period of time. The people that debate this can't even perform at a high level in their job for more than one week at a time much less for 20 years. To create a dynasty like the Patriots did take a lot of effort from their head coach and quarterback and they should be appreciated for being two of the greatest of all time at their respective positions.
